Is Your Daughter Teased Because of Her Coily Hair?

How would you feel if your daughter runs to you, crying, whining about being relentlessly teased in school because of her coily curls?

It is any mother's woe to find their child in tears especially if the reason is something that has nothing to do with character but simply because of her hair. Some people are so disapproving and children, mostly being naïve of how they hurt other people's feelings, can be cruel.

Being biracial, some girls would have curly hair that could go unruly and tricky to manage and control. And when they are teased about it, they can grow timid and shy, not understanding the real beauty they are blessed with. Often, their solution is to hide their mane behind buns and ponytails.

To mothers who are experiencing the same with their daughters, here is what we suggest you do:
  • Look for photos of gorgeous women (there are plenty out there) who also have mixed race hair yet look stunning in their hairstyles. Celebrity photos will be perfect. This will help motivate your little girl.
  • Tell inspirational stories. One example is that of a girl who was also teased about the look and feel of her hair but her mother found a support group through a Facebook page where the girl's story and photo were featured. The number of ‘Likes' and positive comments the photo and the story received gave the girl the confidence she needed to wear her hair with great pride.
  • Make your daughter understand that her hair is not difficult, only different. It may also help her confidence if you avoid using negative words to describe her locks. Instead of saying "your hair may be difficult to manage but", say something like "your hair is unique because".

Your child's hair is really not difficult, it only needs proper care, love and of course, the right product. Using the kind of shampoo and conditioner that will make her better appreciate the uniqueness of her curls will make a big difference. On top of that, your kind words praising the beauty of each perfect curl on your child's head will help her learn how to love her looks and her biracial hair because beyond doubt, the kind of hair she has is something that not everybody can have. Some girls even spend money just to have coiled mane because they make a special kind of attraction, something that really makes a statement. With an array of natural hair care made available online, your child's special locks will even become the envy of others.
