Thai Restaurant Week, sponsored by the Royal Thai Embassy and Office of Agricultural Affairs in Washington DC, honors Songkran, the traditional Thai New Year observed each year from April 13 -15. Throughout the week, diners in the Washington DC area will have an opportunity to taste distinctive dishes and receive discounts at participating restaurants. Songkran is a time for cleansing and renewal in Thailand, symbolized by the delicate splashing of water.
Thais celebrate by sprinkling jasmine-scented water on the palms of their elders in a sign of respect. In return, the seniors bestow blessings on their younger family members and neighbors.
