Pizza Port Review: A San Diego Favorite

106 145

Pizza Port recently opened its 5th location in the Bressi Ranch neighborhood of Carlsbad. To commemorate the occasion, lets take a look at this favorite San Diego pizza and brew company and see what Pizza Port is all about -- plus, which location is best for you.

About Pizza Port

Parents with toddlers, teenagers hanging out, couples out on date night and adult friends of every age group all manage to fit in and have fun at Pizza Port.

Started in 1987 in Solana Beach by a brother and sister team, Pizza Port has a laidback surfer vibe and decor that appeals to generations of San Diegans. The self-service food (you order at a counter and pick up your food when your name is called) and community picnic table-style dining seems like it could be a recipe in chaos, but instead contributes to cozy conversations and lots of laughter.

Pizza Port Food and Beer

The pizzas are large and the toppings plentiful at Pizza Port. Popular pizzas are inspired by the region such as the Carlsbad, a pizza topped with chicken, artichokes and feta; the seafood-topped Pizza Solana; or the Mexican-inspired San Clemente with black bean sauce, Spanish spices, cilantro and veggies. Try your pizza choice with Pizza Port's yummy -- and healthier -- whole grain beer crust option. In addition to pizza, Pizza Port also serves up wings, salads, cheese sticks and soft pretzels.

Pizza Port brews its own beers and is a leading San Diego brewery. Pizza Port has a varying selection on tap depending on the location.

Popular brews include the Carlsbad Honey, Shark Bite Red and ChronicAle. Pizza Port also has other local breweries on tap in addition to their own creations. Non-beer drinkers can order wine or soda.

Solana Beach Pizza Port

The original Pizza Port remains a favorite for many San Diegans who have built memories at the location. It's the smallest of the Pizza Ports, but packs in a lot of personality with wooden beams decorated with surf posters and memorabilia. Due to its cramped quarters, this Pizza Port is the least kid-friendly, though there are a couple arcade games in the back to keep a few entertained. For those who like an outdoor ambiance with their pizza and beer, the Solana Beach Pizza Port has a narrow patio with tiki umbrellas for shade.

Address: 135 N. Highway 101, Solana Beach

Carlsbad Village Pizza Port

There's often a long food ordering line at this busy location -- so be prepared for one member of your group to immediately get in line while the other scouts for a table (or heads to the shorter beer line to grab a pitcher). Though busy, seating can usually be found at the Carlsbad Village Pizza Port as the community vibe of the joint means most people are willing to scoot down and give up elbow room to accommodate other patrons. Those looking for a more intimate experience should get there early to nab one of the booth tables by the wall. There is also a dim patio sandwiched between Pizza Port and its neighboring building -- which just happens to be the Pizza Port Bottle Shop

Address: 571 Carlsbad Village Drive, Carlsbad

Pizza Port Ocean Beach

Pizza Port has long been a North County San Diego institution and that changed in 2010 with the opening of Pizza Port in Ocean Beach. The OB Pizza Port was met with much excitement and continues to be a hopping spot on OB's beer and culinary scene. Pizza Port Ocean Beach has a narrow patio overlooking Bacon Street, making it ideal for people watching. If the patio is full, patrons can grab a spot at one of the long tables indoors. Pizza Port OB has the same good food and drink as its predecessors, though lacks some of the rustic and beachy charm that the interiors of Solana Beach and Carlsbad Village hold.

Address: 1956 Bacon Street, San Diego

Pizza Port Bressi Ranch

The newest Pizza Port branch located in east Carlsbad has a more modern feel to it than the other San Diego Pizza Ports thanks to white walls, silver accents and an open second story that looks over the ground floor. This large Pizza Port has a bar on both levels for adults to enjoy while still catering to kids with plenty of video games, extra space around the tables and a large fish tank near the entrance. This Pizza Port with its suburb location and space seems destined to be the most family-friendly of all the Pizza Ports.

Address: 2730 Gateway Road, Carlsbad

Pizza Port San Clemente

If you find yourself outside San Diego and in the OC for a night, you can still visit Pizza Port's savory charm at the San Clemente Pizza Port -- the one branch not located in San Diego County.

Address:301 N. El Camino Real, San Clemente
