What is Albuterol HFA?

104 73

    Function

    • Albuterol is a bronchodilator that increases air flow to the lungs by relaxing muscles in the airways. The usual dose is one or two inhalations every four to six hours to prevent symptoms.

    Specifics

    • The relaxation effect on the airways reaches from the trachea to the terminal bronchioles. Albuterol is effective at relaxing the airway no matter what is causing the symptoms.

    CFC Problems

    • Since 1978, CFCs have been phased out from nearly every product because of their harmful effects on the Earth's protective ozone layer. Inhalers with CFC propellants could no longer be sold in the U.S. after December 31, 2008.

    Spray Difference

    • Because albuterol HFA has a softer and less forceful spray than CFC
inhalers, physicians and pharmacists assured patients they would still receive effective treatment for their breathing problems. The dosage received is the same even though the spray is lighter.

    Cleaning

    • HFA inhalers also have specific cleaning instructions which differ from the CFC inhalers. Patients can follow instructions provided with the product, or ask for assistance from the pharmacist or doctor.
