Investigate the availability of local propane suppliers. If you convert your natural gas furnace to propane and a local supplier isn't available, you may not have access to a consistent delivery schedule.

If you choose to tackle this project by yourself instead of using a propane installation contractor, take out the required building permit. Call for timely inspections to ensure all of the equipment is installed to code. You may need two different inspectors, as some municipalities have a separate electrical inspector who looks at all of the electrical connections, fuses, switches and disconnect boxes.

Notify the propane contractor if your home is in a high-altitude region. High-altitude propane conversion kits are modified for oxygen and pressure differences associated with high altitude.

Research the model and make of your Coleman furnace. While propane furnaces are merely natural gas furnaces with modifications, the propane company will need unique tools and conversion kits to retrofit your furnace. If necessary, you might need to contact Coleman or your supplier for an appropriate conversion kit.

Show the installation contractor the natural gas shut-off valve and circuit breaker. During the conversion, he will need to turn off the gas and electricity to your home. Be aware of this minor inconvenience, especially if the weather is cool and your family is home.

Find a safe location for the installation of your propane tank, out of the way of children and traffic. The propane contractor will suggest a tank size based on the size of your home, any other appliances powered by propane, your home's geographical location, total BTU load (British Thermal Unit) and how well insulated the home is.
