How to Build Up a Stockpile
- 1). Decide how many month's worth of food you want stockpiled. If you feel comfortable having three months, then go with that. If you'd feel more comfortable with six, or even 12, then that's fine too. You need to decide where your comfort zone lies.
- 2). Utilize a food storage calculator, which can be found online, to compile a list of items you will need to meet your stockpile requirements. If you chose three months, then you'll need to make sure your list of food includes three month's worth of food.
- 3). Browse store circulars. Look through grocery, department and pharmacy store circulars to find items that are on sale and on your food storage list. Another great place to look for deals on food and cooking supplies are discount stores like Dollar General, Family Dollar and Dollar Tree.
- 4). Clip coupons. Each Sunday you should sit down and cut out coupons from your Sunday paper. Then compare the coupons you have with sale items. You will notice that you will find even greater buys by utilizing coupons as well.
- 5). Buy in bulk. Another great way to stock up on food is to visit stores like Costco, Sam's and BJ's for bulk items. These stores also have sales and coupons, so make sure to base your purchases on those as well.
