- 1). Find the telephone country code for Sweden. Call your local phone service provider and ask for the country code for direct dialing to Sweden or locate the country code online. AT&T maintains an online list of all country codes (see Resources). The country code for Sweden is 46.
- 2). Find the city code for the city in Sweden that you will be calling. This can also be found by contacting your local phone service provider or finding the code online (see Resources). If, for example, you will be calling Stockholm, the city code is 8. Other city codes for Sweden are 31 for Goteborg and 40 for Malmo.
- 3). Write down all the digits that you will need to dial to place the call. Since placing international calls involves dialing more digits than normal, and isn't a familiar task for most people, callers tend to dial more slowly than normal. Most phone service providers allow only a limited amount of time to dial a phone number before the telephone switch delivers an error message to the user stating the call can't be completed as dialed. Looking at the string of digits you need to dial while you are actually dialing will help you dial faster and avoid mis-dialing.
- 4). Place the call to Sweden. Pick up your phone and dial 011 (indicates you are placing an international call), then 46 (the country code for Sweden), then the city code and then the local phone number. If you are calling a friend who lives in Goteborg and the friend's local phone number in Sweden is 525-6441, you would dial 011-46-31-5256441. Your local phone switch will route your call to Sweden, causing your friend's phone to ring. Once the call is answered you will have successfully placed your call to Sweden.
