With only two days left in a memorable World Championships, Team USA kept the ball rolling as all 10 athletes and the women’s 400m medley relay advanced. Two Americans – Kara Lynn Joyce (Ann Arbor, Mich.) and Jessica Hardy (Long Beach, Calif.) – are the top seeds in their respective events, in addition to the women's 400m medley relay.

Competing in the 50m freestyle, Joyce swam a prelimary time of 25.23 for the top seed in tonight’s semifinal.

Australia’s Libby Lenton is just one-hundredth behind Joyce as the second seed, with Sweden’s Therese Alshammar rounding out the top three. Swimming in her fourth individual event of the meet, Natalie Coughlin (Vallejo, Calif.) tied with Erica Morningstar of Canada for the 10th seed in 25.54.

Hardy posted a morning swim of 30.85 in the 50m breaststroke to earn the top seed. Swimming in the same heat, New Zealand’s Zoe Baker sits in second, and Tara Kirk (Bremerton, Wash.) is tied with Leisel Jones of Australia for the third seed. Kirk, already a silver medalist at these championships, finished with a time of 31.39.

The U.S. women will swim in lane four in tonight’s final of the 400m medley relay after securing the top seed in this morning’s prelims. The team of Leila Vaziri (Coral Springs, Fla.), Hardy, Dana Vollmer (Granbury, Texas) and Amanda Weir (Lawrenceville, Ga.) posted a time of 4:01.10 to lead the field. Australia is seeded second, and Japan is third.

In the men’s 1500m freestyle, Larsen Jensen (Bakersfield, Calif.) is the top American finisher as the second seed, and Erik Vendt (North Easton, Mass.) is seeded sixth.

Jensen’s time was 14:56.28, almost three seconds behind top seed David Davies of Great Britain. Vendt, who notched a time of 14:59.82, swam the entire race without goggles after they broke just before the start of the race.

Ryan Lochte (Daytona Beach, Fla.) and Aaron Peirsol (Irvine, Calif.) both advanced out of preliminary heats in the 50m backstroke, notching the fifth and 10th seeds, respectively. Lochte posted a time of 25.68, while Peirsol touched in 25.96. Both swimmers scratched from the evening finals, the reason is unkown at press time.

Tonight’s finals will include the semifinals of the three 50 distances contested this morning, in addition to the finals of the men’s 100m butterfly, women’s 200m backstroke, men’s 50m freestyle, women’s 50m butterfly and the women’s 400m medley relay.
