How to Tighten the Torque in a Cylinder Head
- 1). Determine the torque specifications for your cylinder head. This information can be found in your vehicle's maintenance manual. You could also call a local mechanic, who likely has access to this information. The torque procedure will likely have multiple steps, all of which must be applied separately.
- 2). Apply the first torque to the center-most bolt.
- 3). Apply the torque to the two bolts to the right of the center-most bolt. Torque the top first, then the bottom.
- 4). Apply the torque to the two bolts to the left of the center-most bolt. Torque the bottom first, then the top.
- 5). Apply the torque step to the next set of bolts out to the right of the center-most bolt. Apply it first to the top bolt, then to the bottom.
- 6). Apply the torque step to the next set of bolts out to the left of the center-most bolt. Apply it first to the bottom bolt, then to the top.
- 7). Continue working outward in this fashion until you've tightened all bolts. The bolts to the right should all be tightened from the top to the bottom; the bolts to the left should all be tightened from the bottom to the top. This sequence -- called helical sequences -- ensures that the torque is applied evenly throughout the component.
- 8). Wait about 15 minutes after all bolts on the component have been torqued to the first measure. The bolts are actually a little elastic, and need time to stretch and settle before the next application of torque.
- 9). Apply the second step of the torque sequence to all of the bolts in the exact same order as you worked for the first step.
