How to Tell an Authentic Chanel Bag

    • 1). Check the material of the bag. Authentic Chanel bags are made from calfskin, not from lambskin. If the label indicates anything other than calfskin, then your bag is not an authentic Chanel bag.

    • 2). Look at the quality of the stitching. If the bag seems to be overly quilted or if the stitches seem uneven or otherwise flawed, your bag is most likely a fake. Chanel insists on intensive levels of quality control, and stitching that is imperfect would not pass the tests necessary to get the bag to the sales floor.

    • 3). Examine the Chanel icon, particularly in stamped items like a clasp. The top of the right "C" should be over the left "C" and the bottom of the left "C" should flow over the right. This is an easy step to overlook, but it can tell you immediately if the bag is authentic or not.

    • 4). Check the label carefully. The label should read "Chanel France" or "Chanel Italy." These are the only two locations that would be indicated on the label of an authentic Chanel bag.

    • 5). Look for the tissue paper. Authentic Chanel handbags are wrapped in white tissue paper. The Chanel logo and the word "Chanel" are printed in white ink on the tissue paper.

    • 6). Examine the back pocket on the bag, if the bag has one. An authentic Chanel bag will have matching patterns on the pocket and on the bag itself; the patterns will line up completely.
