How to Replace the Starter Wire on a 1997 Dodge Ram
- 1). Disconnect the negative battery cable connector from the battery and then remove the positive battery cable connector from the battery. Remove both with an adjustable wrench.
- 2). Locate the starter under the driver's side of the engine next to the transmission casing. It is approximately eight inches in length and about three inches in diameter. It has a large red wire attached to the back of it. The large red wire is the starter wire.
- 3). Remove the nut that secures the wire to the threaded post on the end of the starter and then pull the wire off. Use an adjustable wrench to remove the nut.
- 4). Locate the smaller red wire that extends from the clamp on the positive battery cable. This is the other end of the starter wire. Remove the nut that secures the starter wire to the positive battery connector.
- 5). Pull the wire up and out of the engine bay.
- 6). Thread the new starter wire along the firewall on the Dodge Ram until it extends to the bottom of the engine.
- 7). Connect the starter wire to the positive battery cable connector and secure it by replacing the bolt.
- 8). Connect the other end of the starter wire to the threaded post and secure it by replacing the bolt.
- 9). Reconnect the positive and negative battery cable connectors.
