How to Fix Rust on Trucks
- 1). Apply a lubricant such as mineral oil or WD-40. Apply the mineral oil to the rust with a paper towel. If using the WD-40, spray this on the rust. Let the oil soak into the rust for 10 to 20 minutes, then scrub at the rust with a scrubbing pad, steel wool, wire brush or similar abrasive object. Wipe away the rust and the lubricant.
- 2). Sprinkle table salt on the truck's rust stains. Pour lime juice on the salt. Another option is to squeeze the juice of a fresh lime. The "Earth Easy" website recommends you leave the lime and salt paste on the rust stains for 2 to 3 hours. Scrub off rust using steel wool, a wire brush or scrubbing pad. Wipe the area clean. Use a paste of 1 part lime juice to 2 parts table salt for more difficult rust stains.
- 3). Use rust removers. Buy a commercial rust remover from a hardware store. Before using, put on work gloves and a white face mask. Apply a small amount of the rust remover to a scrubbing pad. Apply the rust remover to the stains on the truck. Wait 5 to 10 minutes. Scrub the rust with the scrubbing pad. Wipe clean. Rust removers have acids like oxalic acid or hydrochloric acid that dissolve the rust.
