A disorganized linen closet can be a real mess to deal with.
A properly organized one makes it very easy to find the linens you need in a hurry, and serves a useful purpose in your home.
These four quick tips will help you clean your closet out for good.

• Purge the unnecessary.
  Start by removing any items that do not belong in a linen closet, which would be most things besides sheet, blankets, pillows and towels.
  These items will have to find a new home.
  As a rule of thumb, you should have three sheet sets and two blankets for each bed.
  For each person in the household you should have three each of bath towels, washcloths and hand towels.
  If you are way over stocked, consider donating or selling your extra linens.
  Having more than you could possibly use is a waste.
  
• Clean the closet.
  Next clear the closet out and clean the shelves.
  Bleach water should be sufficient.
  Add a box of baking soda to help keep the closet and linens in it smelling fresh.
  Finally, line the shelves with acid free tissue paper.
  This will protect the linens in the closet, especially older and possibly valuable quilts and blankets.
  
• Sort by size.
  Put big and less used items, like quilts, pillows or beach towels, on the lowest or highest shelf.
  Fold each sheet set neatly, and store it in one of the pillow cases from the set.
  Sort towels and washcloths into piles of the same type or size.
  You can fold them the traditional method, or role them up like they do in a spa.
  Keep the stacks short.
  Nothing is worse than having to fight an avalanche when you are just trying to get a towel to dry off.
  
• Keep it neat.
  This is always the hardest part, keeping the organization going.
  If you have trouble remembering where everything goes after you get it all organized, you could take a picture and tape it on the inside of the door.
  You could also label the shelves with some masking tape.
  If you resist using the closet for other items besides linens, it will be a very useful storage area.
  

A messy linen closet is not that difficult to tame, these four tips should get you well on the way to avoiding the dreaded closet avalanche.
