How to Add Viking Horns to a Bicycle Helmet
- 1). Put on your heavy work gloves and cut two pieces of chicken wire, each measuring 12 inches square, with tin snips.
- 2). Shape each piece of chicken wire into a basic cone shape with a curve. Make the tips of the horns as sharp as possible so they will still have a slight point after they are covered in paper mache.
- 3). Mix 1/2 cup flour with enough water to make a mixture with the consistency of pancake batter. Whisk the mixture to remove all the lumps. Boil 4 cups of water in a pan. Remove the pan from the heat and immediately add the flour mixture. Whisk again to make a smooth paste. Let the paste cool to room temperature before using it.
- 4). Rip a newspaper into 2-inch-wide strips. Rip more later if you need it.
- 5). Dip a strip of newspaper in paste and remove the excess paste with your hand. Wrap the strip around one of the chicken wire horns. Continue adding more strips of paste-covered newspaper strips until the horns are covered, including the end that will be attached to your helmet. The strips are long enough to span the open space at the end of the cone. Overlap the strips and lay them down at different angles for better coverage. Allow the horn to dry.
- 6). Repeat Step 5 with the other horn.
- 7). Lay another layer of paste-covered newspaper and let it dry. Add more layers if you want, allowing the paste to dry in between.
- 8). Paint the horns whatever color you would like.
- 9). Attach adhesive-backed industrial strength hook-and-loop fasteners to the bases of both horns and to the sides of the helmet where you want the horns attached. Use as many pieces of hook-and-loop fastener as you need to feel confident your horns won't fall off while you are riding.
