Basket

• The basket strainer sits inside the sink strainer and acts as a catchall to prevent unwanted debris from entering the home's drain system. Sinks with garbage disposals usually don't have this type of configuration, as the garbage disposal chops up the debris into manageable sizes for easy disposal.
  
  

Strainer

• Called the strainer, this metal collar fits the sink hole and attaches to the drain plumbing for the sink. It installs in combination with a rubber washer, a paper washer, a locknut, locknut washer and tailpiece that connects to the trap.
  
  

Waste Kit

• The waste kit often comes with the sink strainer, the sink strainer baskets, tailpiece, trap, washers and other pipe configurations to make for an easy install. If any of the plumbing pieces develop leaks over the course of use, these are easily replaceable with parts from the local hardware store. The sink waste kit is usually used for new sink installations.
