Origin

• It is possible that the origin of the pinata lies in China. When Marco Polo visited China in the 13th century, he found the Chinese using colored paper to cover forms made in the shapes of animals such as oxen or buffalo. The forms were then knocked open to release seeds during New Year celebrations.
  
  

The Pinata in Europe

• The custom spread to Europe by the 14th century. The first Sunday of Lent was called "Pinata Sunday." The original pinatas were made without a base and resembled a clay water container. In Italian, "pignatta" means "fragile pot."
  
  

The Pinata in the New World

• Spanish missionaries used the colorful pinata as a way to attract converts in North America. The native peoples of Mexico already had a similar tradition where decorated clay pots filled with treasures were broken open with a stick or club. The Mayans, who loved sports, used blindfolds on participants to create a challenging game.
  
  

Religious Meaning

• Because of the missionaries, the pinata acquired Christian religious significance. The clay pot represented Satan. The most traditional Mexican pinata style was a round ball with seven points, each one representing a deadly sin. The candy and fruit inside represented the temptations of earthly life.
  
  

Pinatas Today

• Pinatas today no longer have religious significance, but they are as popular as ever. In Mexico, they are a tradition during Las Posadas, the processions leading up to Christmas, and at birthday parties.
  
  

Pinata Filling

• Pinatas are traditionally filled with fruits and candies. A Mexican pinata might include peanuts, guavas, jicamas and oranges in addition to wrapped candy.
