How to Understand California SR22 Auto Insurance

104 31
    • 1). Contact your current insurance carrier to inquire about SR22 auto insurance. Most auto insurance companies do not offer this type of auto insurance product.

    • 2). If your auto insurance carrier offers SR22 insurance, proceed to steps 4-6.

    • 3). If your auto insurance company does not offer SR22 auto insurance, contact a California auto insurance broker or a licensed California SR-22 auto insurance broker (preferably). The National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) will have listings for local licensed agents. Check the NAIC website www.naic.org or call the NAIC directly at 816-783-8500.

    • 4). After obtaining SR22 auto insurance, you must carry the policy for three years from the date driving privileges have been reinstated.

    • 5). During the three-year period, you cannot allow the SR22 policy to cancel, lapse or to be terminated. You cannot miss payments (not even by one day) and you cannot switch carriers without notification. If any of these issues occur, the SR22 auto insurance carrier is required (by law) to contact the California Department of Motor Vehicles. This means your three-year period will start all over from the beginning, no matter how long you have carried the SR22 insurance.

    • 6). According to autoinsurancetips.com., after obtaining SR22 liability auto insurance, you will receive a certificate of insurance called "SR22." You must carry the SR22 certificate at all times.
