Framing the House

• The Blue Atlas cedar grows up to 120 feet in height in the wild, but when cultivated stays about half that size. Its growth is mainly vertical during the first decade after planting. The medium height and vertical growth pattern creates a smooth vertical line that is perfect for accenting around a home. Plant two on either side of the front of your home for an elegant frame, or scatter them around the perimeter.
  
  

Feature

• A landscape feature puts one major plant, such as a large shrub or tree, in the center of an open space for a strong visual impact. The weeping variety of the Cedar atlantica, often known by the name Glauca pendula, is perfect for a show-stopping feature in your home landscape. The bright blue-green color and gracefully sweeping branches match a variety of ground cover options for surrounding the tree with a raised bed.
  
  

Harsh Locations

• Due to the adaptability of Blue Atlas cedars, they grow well in climates with both freezing winters and drought-stricken summerss. The USDA Hardiness Zones for this plant range from 6 to 9. Some evergreens can't handle such a range of conditions and are only suited for either cold or hot climates. Desert states such as Arizona and Nevada often experience temperature drops during winter nights that kill more tropical plants, so try adding a Blue Atlas cedar to your desert landscaping projects.
  
  

Winter Interest

• As with all evergreens, the Blue Atlas cedar works well for winter color and interest in your home landscape. It works well because the frosty blue color of the short needles contrasts well against snow. When mixed with other evergreens of a similar growth pattern such as the deodar cedar and fir pine, these three trees work to create a visual barrier that will keep its foliage during the winter. This creates a natural and attractive privacy or wind barrier.
