Tucked in the northwestern corner of Georgia, the city of Summerville, incorporated in 1839, is the county seat of Chattooga County. With an estimated population of 4,500, Summerville has lots of small-town charm and Southern history. The county courthouse is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Summerville is within five miles of Alabama and about 40 miles south of the Tennessee border. The closest military bases are all about 90 miles away in the Atlanta metropolitan area. - Fort Gillem, 100 miles southwest of Summerville on the southern edge of Atlanta, is a satellite installation of the U.S. Army garrison in nearby Fort McPherson. Originally known as the Atlanta Army Depot and then the Atlanta General Depot, Fort Gillem has trained soldiers for every major conflict since World War II, and more importantly, has sent and housed supplies and equipment bound for war zones for decades. Now, Fort Gillem is home to the First U.S. Army, the Army and Air Force Exchange Service, and the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command, as well as numerous other Department of Defense organizations.

While Fort Gillem primarily provides logistical support, Fort McPherson is home to Southeast Region's Installation Management Command, the U.S. Army Forces Command, the Army Reserve Command, and U.S. Army Central. Fort McPherson specializes in training soldiers for combat and provides the largest command post for the Army in the nation. Its many command-centers also make it a communications hub for the Army in the Southeastern United States.

mcpherson.army.mil - The Atlanta Naval Air Station in the northern suburb of Marietta is 78 miles southwest of Summerville. The station's mission is to train Navy and Marine Corps reservists for both aviation and non-aviation reserve units. With an on-base population of 900, made up of both military and civilian personnel, the air station is home to Marine Air Group 42, Carrier Air Group 20, three Navy squadrons and two Marine squadrons. On-base aircraft include F/A-18 Hornets (fighter jets), E-2s (communications airplanes), and C-9s (transportation planes).

One of the busiest bases in the United States, Dobbins' main mission is to train reserves for the Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps and the Georgia Air and Army National Guard. Dobbins provides support to the Atlanta Naval Air Station, which is only a few miles away, in addition its primary tasks. Dobbins is home to the 94th Air Wing, as well as Lockheed Martin's aeronautical division, the company responsible for F-22 Raptor fighter jet.
