How to Build Cardboard Planes

    • 1). Place the cardboard box on your working surface with the bottom of the box facing upward. Cut off the bottom of the box. Keep the flaps from the bottom in large pieces to use later.

    • 2). Flip the box over and cut a circle or rectangle in the top center of the box. Make sure the hole is large enough for the child to fit his head through.

    • 3). Designate one side of the box as the front. Cut out two long, thin rectangles from a piece of white poster board and round each of the corners. Place one on top of the other to make an "X" and poke a butterfly fastener through the center. Poke the fastener through the front of the plane and fold the ends of the fastener flat against the inside of the box.

    • 4). Measure 1 inch up from the bottom of the left and right side of the box. Draw a rectangle from this point up to the top of the box. Cut along the traced lines, except for the line along the top edge of the box. Fold each rectangle upward to make the wings of the airplane.

    • 5). Cut a square from one of the cut-off cardboard flaps. Cut a large square in the middle of the square to make the windshield. Measure 1 inch from one edge and fold over the cardboard. Glue the folded 1 inch to the top front of the airplane and then place a piece of duct tape across the folded section to keep it in place.

    • 6). Paint the cardboard airplane box. Paint the entire airplane a single color and let it dry. Use a paintbrush with another color of paint to add contrast color on the wings of the plane.
