  Several varieties of soil exist in Oklahoma that are conducive to good grape growing. This makes the central and eastern portions of the state good for wine production. Several vineyards have cropped up in recent years, building the growing reputation of the state as a quality wine maker.
  
  

Stoney-Fine Sandy Loam

• This soil type found in the eastern portion of Oklahoma is composed of heavy amounts of stone, fine sand and clay. According to the Wine Geeks website, decaying organic matter trapped in the clay allows for a nutrient rich grape growing environment. This type of soil is in the Black Sheep Winery & Vineyard location in the Poteau River Valley. The vineyard is able to support a number of varietals from the hearty Cabernet to the semi-sweet Riesling and Chardonnay.

Gravelly Loam

• The southeastern corner of Oklahoma is dominated by gravelly loam, a soil type of volcanic origin also found in the wine-rich Napa Valley in California. Gravelly loam drains well, allowing roots to penetrate deep and take advantage of nutrients stored underneath the top layer of soil. This area of Oklahoma is home to the Girls Gone Wine Winery & Vineyard in Broken Bow, OK. The winery sells a handful of dry reds and blush varietals with several sweeter fruit type wines such as blueberry, green apple and strawberry also available.

Pure Loam

• The central part of Oklahoma is characterized by a pure loam soil. Sand, silt and clay occur in equal parts with this soil type, allowing for a controllable growing environment. This area is home to the Native Spirits Winery which sits near Thunderbird National Park in Norman, OK.
