Several varieties of soil exist in Oklahoma that are conducive to good grape growing. This makes the central and eastern portions of the state good for wine production. Several vineyards have cropped up in recent years, building the growing reputation of the state as a quality wine maker. - This soil type found in the eastern portion of Oklahoma is composed of heavy amounts of stone, fine sand and clay. According to the Wine Geeks website, decaying organic matter trapped in the clay allows for a nutrient rich grape growing environment. This type of soil is in the Black Sheep Winery & Vineyard location in the Poteau River Valley. The vineyard is able to support a number of varietals from the hearty Cabernet to the semi-sweet Riesling and Chardonnay.
