Increased spider sightings warrant a termite inspection

"I'm seeing a lot of small black spiders with white spots on their back.....and they jump!!!! They seem to be all around my windows and baseboards!"

I hear that quote a lot this time of the year. In Middle Georgia, the spider people are referring to is the Jumping Spider or Salticidae.

These guys don't rely on webs to catch their prey, they actually just chase them down. Like all ground spiders, Salticidae are strong and fast, unlike their web spinning cousins that rely more on catching prey in their web.

When I see several jumping spiders (or for that matter, any type of ground spider) in a home, my biggest concern is why they are there to begin with. For example, did bad weather force them in or is there a food source inside the walls? Not to alarm anyone, but spiders DO feed on termites and if there is an infestation inside your wall, that could be attracting the spiders. I know this first hand, as I noticed a HUGE increase in spiders around my home, shortly before installing new flooring. While removing the baseboards of the exterior wall next to my patio, what did I see? You guessed it- termites, termites, termites.

That episode prompted a call to a local pest and termite control company to “remedy the situation”. After a few months of my termite treatment, the spiders disappeared.

If you begin to encounter an increased amount of spiders in your home, the best action you can take is to call a reputable pest and termite control company to provide you with a free pest evaluation. Don’t except a simple “walk around the house”. For a proper inspection, they should be knocking on walls and window seals, pulling back carpet, inspecting your crawlspace (if applicable), and checking underneath your sinks.
