Fun Elementary Math Game
- Obtain empty egg cartons, perhaps by asking students bring them in. In each egg carton, write the numbers 1 through 12 in the bottom of each of the 12 indentations in the carton. Place two small objects in each carton; you could use dimes, dried peas, beads or any two similarly sized items. Close each carton. Have a number of calculators or times table cards available for the game as well.
- Create teams of 2-3 students. Have the students sit at a table or on the floor with an opposing team. Give each group an egg carton (with the small objects inside) and a calculator or times tables card. Also distribute a piece of paper and a pen or pencil to each group for the purpose of keeping score.
- Instruct students to take turns picking up the egg carton and shaking it. The player then opens the egg carton. Whichever two numbers the items inside are resting on must be multiplied by the player. If the player answers correctly, he earns one point for his team. If he answers incorrectly, the other team has a chance to answer for a point. Teams take turns until one team wins by reaching 20 points. If there is a dispute or question about an answer, use the calculator or the times tables card to check for accuracy.
