The Filing Date for U.S. Tax Returns
- Traditionally, April 15 is the filing date for U.S. tax returns. In 2011, it is still the deadline to file all 2010 state income tax returns, but the federal filing date has been extended. Persons who choose to file an extension electronically must do so by April 15, 2011.
- Due to the observation of Emancipation Day in the District of Columbia, the filing date for federal U.S. tax returns is April 18, 2011, rather than April 15, 2011. Tax extension requests for 2010 taxes, not electronically filed, are also due by April 18, 2011. The April 18 filing date and all subsequent filing dates relating to income taxes are applicable to individuals, household employers, partnerships and corporations.
- The last filing date for electronically filed U.S. income tax returns for tax extensions is October 17, 2011. Traditionally, the last acceptable date for filing tax returns with extensions is October 15. The IRS approved the date change because October 15 is a Saturday in 2011.
- The last filing date to print and electronically submit a federal 2010 income tax return to the IRS is October 20, 2011.
- The filing date for amendments to claim a tax refund is three years from the filing date of the original return, or two years from the date the taxes were paid, whichever is later. Reasons to file an amendment for prior tax returns include correcting an error, to add information, to change information previously filed. Amendments made to a federal tax return can also have an impact on state tax returns.
