How to Make Better Rigs for Big Catfish
- 1). Cut a 2-foot length of line from the end of your main fishing line with a pair of scissors. This line will serve as a leader later on in the rigging process.
- 2). Slide a 1/2 ounce or larger bank weight onto the end of your main fishing line. Choose a metal, glass or plastic bead and place it on the line below the weight.
- 3). Attach the free end of the line to one eye of the barrel swivel with a Uni knot. Form the Uni knot by feeding several inches of line through the eye of the swivel. Pull the free end up beside the main line to form a double line. Turn the free end down toward the swivel, forming a loop alongside the double line. Wrap the free end around the double line and through the loop three to five times. Moisten the knot and pull down tightly against the swivel eye.
- 4). Attach one end of the 2-foot leader to the eye on the opposite end of the barrel swivel with a Uni knot. Moisten the knot and pull it down tightly. Attach a 2/0 size Kahle hook to the free end of the leader with a Palomar knot. Form the Palomar knot by feeding 5 or 6 inches of line through the eye of the hook. Turn the end back and feed it through the eye so that you have a double line on one side of the hook eye and a loop on the other side. Tie an overhand knot with the loop and double line, pull the loop around the bend of the hook, moisten the knot and pull tight.
- 5). Place catfish bait of your choice on the hook, making sure the point and as much of the hook as possible are covered with the bait.
