How to Replace the Inverter on an iBook G3
- 1). Shutdown the laptop. Disconnect all cables, and external devices. Remove the battery pack from the compartment on the bottom side of the laptop. The battery pack is secured in place by a locking screw. Wear an antistatic wrist strap as you dismantle the laptop to prevent electrical damage to the computer.
- 2). Pull open the display panel. Pry off the display panel's front bezel with your finger tips. The front bezel is the main plastic piece on the front of the display panel.
- 3). Remove the three Phillips-head screws fastening the hinge cover in place. Carefully remove the hinge cover from the laptop. Avoid scratching the screen's surface.
- 4). Remove the 12 Phillips-head screws fastening the LCD screen to the metal frame inside the display panel. Grasp the screen, tilt it forward and place it face down on the laptop's keyboard.
- 5). Remove the Phillips-head screws fastening the metal bracket to the back side of the LCD screen. Avoid damaging the wireless antenna cable that runs parallel to the metal bracket. Remove the bracket from the back of the screen.
- 6). Disconnect the camera and video ribbon cables from the connectors on the back side of the screen. The camera cable is the smaller cable, and the video cable is the larger one. Peel away the yellow adhesive tape securing each cable in place.
- 7). Lift the screen out of the display panel. Locate the inverter board along the bottom edge of the screen's back side. Disconnect the cables from each end of the inverter. Lift the inverter out of its compartment on the back of the screen.
- 8). Reverse this procedure to install the new inverter board.
