You know you need a new resume--or need to create your first resume--but aren't quite sure where to start. If you have the information that you want to include in your resume, but don't know how to format it, resume templates can help you present your skills and accomplishments to employers in the best possible light. All resume templates should include a place for you to input your personal information (i.e. name, address, phone number, and email address). This usually appears at the top of a resume, but depending on the design you choose, your personal contact information could appear as a border for the resume, or at the bottom of the document. A skills summary should also be included in the template. This section should be about a paragraph or so long, which should give you just enough room to describe your previous accomplishments, professional skills, and future career goals.

The section that give details about your professional position should include the dates that you worked at each establishment, your position at each company, and a brief description of your duties. Every template is slightly different when it comes to the formatting of this information, so you may want to check out a few resume samples before completing your final draft. If you are a freelancer or contracted employee, be sure to include this on your resume as well, so that employers will not assume that you can not hold steady employment due to the number of jobs that may be listed on your resume.

Resume templates will also give you ideas on how to include different colors and designs in your resume. While you may not want to get too adventurous in this area, an attractive resume that catches the eye of future employers will definitely help to get you in the door. Try to select assertive yet professional colors, such as blue or hunter green, and make sure that the font for your resumes is both regal and easy to read.

If you're not sure where to get resume templates from, you can always check out the selection that Microsoft Word has to offer. If you already have a computer that include MS Word, you can view the templates by opening the program and going into the Resume Wizard. Always use resume templates that reflect your own personal styles and preferences.
