There are two types of socialization for dogs, environmental and dog interaction.
What is meant by environmental is getting dogs used to everyday household appliances such as televisions, cars, washing machines, vacuum cleaners that can upset them.
This type of socialisation is very useful when the dogs are still puppies as it makes them feel safer in their environment.
Any household appliance can affect some dogs by making them nervous as they may have a nervous personality.
They can perceive a vacuum cleaner as a perceived danger to their " pack " and the dog will see as its duty to bark and growl and therefore protect the pack by warning off the threat.
The best way to cure this problem is for the owner to become the "Alpha" in the pack and by so doing take away the dogs responsibility and decision making role.
The dog will then see that the owner is not worried and will take its cue from that.
If your dog persists in this type of " guarding behaviour I would highly recommend Jan Fennells method of Amichien Bonding® and putting this into practice by keeping the dog away from the machinery in a separate room whilst it is being used.
The other type of socialization is where dogs meets dog in whatever context.
This everyday situation often leads to aggression.
It is therefore advisable to supervise the dog closely at all times.
This behaviour is in the dog's DNA.
The biggest killer of Wolves in the wild is other Wolves.
It is quite natural for dogs from different packs not to get on.
This behaviour can start right at puppy stage.
Even in today's developed society where dogs are prominent and meet each other on a regular basis the basic instinct can show itself at any time and the dogs not only do not get on, but aggressive behaviour shows itself very quickly.
This can even happen in very controlled " social " environments such as dog training classes.
Some breeds are very susceptible to confrontation.
For example Boxers with their bulging eyes, square jaws, prominent chest and short tails appear a threat to other breeds.
This type of appearance can appear odd to other breeds who read the wrong messages into the dog's appearance.
Such confrontation does not happen as often in dogs of the same breed who readily recognise each other's similar appearance and therefore can communicate better.
Getting dogs used to as many different types of things from an early age is a good idea but don't be naive and think every dog will get on with each other.
If your dog has you and your family that's all it needs.
Don't think your dog is bad because it protects you from other dogs it is doing its job, as a member of your pack.
