    States With No Income Tax

    • You may be fortunate to work in one of the nine states with no state income tax. These states are Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Vermont, Washington and Wyoming. No income tax return is required in any of these states. You will still need to file a tax return for income from any state you worked in that has income taxes.

    Resident or Nonresident

    • Some states have a different form for residents and nonresidents. Some states also have a form for part-of-the-year residents. Residence is your home where you intend to live, not a temporary place to stay. If you lived in the state just for the time you were there to work and moved back to your permanent home, you were likely a nonresident or a part-of-the-year resident. Your home state is your residence. Living in a state six months or more may make you a resident. Review the rules for the state so you can use the correct tax form.

    Filing State Taxes

    • You can find information about state income taxes for all 50 states at the American Payroll Association's website (americanpayroll.org). This map has links to the state taxing offices. Tax software often includes state income taxes as well. Review the information on your Form W-2. This form may include the state income tax information you need for filing your state taxes, beginning on line 15 horizontally across the page. You may have had state income taxes withheld and may be entitled to a refund.

If you need an extension to file your tax returns, you may get a federal extension that applies in some states to the state's income taxes. Any federal extension must be filed by the April due date for federal taxes, and it will not extend the payment of taxes. The extension applies only to the time to file your tax return.

E-File Federal and State Income Taxes

    • Federal and state e-filing allows you to file both returns at the same time. The Internal Revenue Service reports that 37 states participate in federal and state e-filing on the IRS.gov website. There is also a state-only e-filing process, with 34 states participating. You may use the IRS website for e-filing both federal and state tax returns. You may also use the Free File Fillable Forms if you need forms not available through e-file.
