• 1). Research the sector that interests you. The job market for state inspectors is very competitive because the majority of inspectors in the health care, agricultural and building sectors are employed by state and local government offices. Research state websites to determine job qualifications and any additional education or training you may need to complete prior to applying.
  
  
• 2). Acquire a bachelor's degree or higher degree that is relevant to your sector of interest. Most state offices require a minimum of a bachelor's degree prior to hire. For example, if you are interested in becoming a state inspector for heath care, your course work may include biology and chemistry or courses directly related to the health-care industry.
  
  
• 3). Obtain work experience prior to applying for a state inspector position. For example, intern with certified state inspectors to gain advanced knowledge of your sector of interest.
  
  
• 4). Acquire voluntary certification and credentials in your sector of interest. Obtaining certifications and credentials with such institutions as the Board of Certified Safety Professionals and the American Board of Industrial Hygiene will make you more competitive than applicants who have yet to obtain sector credentials and certifications.
  
  
• 5). Speak to your local state inspector about job training and work environment. He may help you obtain contacts and other job opportunities that will assist you in your state inspector application process.
