The long-gestating next chapter in the Ghostbusters franchise -- whether it be a sequel or remake -- is as close to reality as it's ever been. The primary reason is that producers have finally given up on bringing back the original cast (Bill Murray long being the holdout, with Harold Ramis' death last year erasing the possibility of a reunion) and have shifted into reboot mode with all-new actors...or rather, actresses.

 

Sony has reportedly signed Melissa McCarthy as one of the quartet of new-era Ghostbusters, and the other three members in negotiations are Kristen Wiig and current Saturday Night Live members Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon. McCarthy is re-teaming with director Paul Feig, with whom she worked on The Heat and Bridesmaids, and while the plot is being kept under wraps, the release date is not. It will hit theaters on July 22, 2016. Maybe.
