Communicating With God - Silence Please

103 18
Communication with God requires stillness of conversation.
What does this mean? Your teacher probably told you in kindergarten "You can't hear if you're talking" right? There's a lot of truth to that.
You also can't hear if your thinking about the next thing you're going to say.
Think about a conversation you've had today.
How much of the time were you actively listening? Active listening is dropping your own agenda and really tuning in to the other person's feelings, position and ideas.
It's seeking to truly understand the other person.
Most of our time in conversation is spent trying to help the other person understand our position.
Very little if any time is invested in seeking to understand the other.
Many books have been written about these ideas of communication and they're helpful but old habits are hard to break and we tend to go on just doing what we've always done.
Communication with God is no different than communication with those you associate with on a daily basis.
The tendency is to approach God as Santa Claus.
We bring God a list, read it off and go on our merry way assuming that God will just take care of all the stuff we dumped on Him.
While that may work for some folks, there are many like you who desire something a bit deeper.
You really want to feel understood by God and sense an understanding of Him.
For you, a superficial relationship with God isn't enough.
To actually get to that place requires stilling the chatter.
Drop the list.
Go to God and just be there in His presence.
Seek first to understand.
Practice active listening.
If you hear nothing at first, don't give up.
Do you think it's possible to understand God in just a moment of time? Relationships require patience, trust must be built.
It will require practice to just still your conversation but it's a great place to begin if you're seeking real communication with God.
