Corruption in Nigeria
CORRUPTION
Corruption has been described as the main problem facing the emergence of a new Nigeria among the committee of nations. With all her huge mineral and manpower resources, and numerous gains from the export of crude oil (about $200 billion earned from the export of petroleum products since independence), yet her people live sin abject poverty. Most of these funds are siphoned by past and present government officials in the country.
Several cases of corruption abound in the country especially at public and government institutions.
One would have asked God again why he endows a people who are so selfish and greedy with so many resources. But God did not make a mistake by giving us all we need to prosper and make us a great country. We are the ones reshaping our own destiny and misusing God's generosity and goodness. it appears that our own god is money and the rat race for it is becoming uglier day by day as there is nothing we cannot do to have it. Even many go to the church to seek the miracle of money!
One becomes so perplexed when all that can be seen from our own democracy is pains, greed, and corruption. Nigeria has continue to behave as if it is not part of the modern world but as a place where you can do anything to become anything. Once you have money by any means, you can buy everything including life and heaven will fall. What other societies will consider a crime is always the norm in Nigeria. We don't care whether others are watching us. This is a society where a single person will park more than 20 cars in his compound and having houses in all major cities of the world and still be looking to acquire more as if he has 10 lives to live, as if he can sleep in two rooms at the same time and as if he can ride in two different cars at the same time. This kind of behavour has been the bane of our present democracy, political system and our society.
A country that has made close to $200 billion from the sales of crude oil product right from independence in 1960 till date cannot boast of any meaningful developmental strides. In all areas the country seems to be drifting down the ladder. A reported sum of $16 million was plunged by top government officials on the pretence of electricity reforms. Annually in its budget, recurrent expenses tend to outpass expendures there by not leaving any room for developmental progress. How can one explain the level of moral decadence and corruption in high places. A university lecturer for two years, resigns and took up public office becomes almost a million immediately. To tackle this measures, the government set up the economic and financial crime commission, the EFCC in 2000 as well as the independent corrupt practices commissions,ICPC. Even past and present governors have been charge with corrupt practices that spanned from money laundering, embezzlements and contracts inflations. The new drive towards eliminating this ugly mess must be embrass by all and sundry. Except we join hands and fight together, the political class will continue to ruin us all.
