The former gets them in and the latter is the threat that keeps them there.
For them to admit that these places are based on sun worship and are born of ignorance from prehistoric times would be the end of their livelihoods and the structure of societies based on them would collapse.
There are massive industries dependent on the same beliefs, such as that of the undertakers, florists, church related services, and so forth.
Law and order is controlled by religions which teach their followers to obey the government.
That means that highly educated people who know better cannot and will not overturn the ideologies that maintain these things.
Heaven and hell are big sticks with mighty power over the vulnerable who are led into following the religions from birth.
Parents are threatened with hell if they do not bring their children into the faith.
That insures the extreme darkness that people like the man from the Philippines has endured all of his life.
