Guide Review - Restaurant De Kas

At De Kas, patrons and chefs alike are surrounded by a lush green garden and park, with plenty of natural light streaming in through the impressive 8 meter high glass conservatory. This shows in the food, which has a light, modern touch. Designed by Dutch It-boy Piet Boon, the dining room offers spectacular views by day and is beautifully lit by floating jellyfish-like installations at night. The restaurant is set in a former city nursery and operates from the belief that food is at its best when prepared with the freshest ingredients, grown and harvested with care for the environment.

Therefore, they cultivate their own herbs, seasonal vegetables and salads and buy fresh ingredients daily from local organic farmers.

The restaurant offers a set 3-course menu, based on the day's harvest, but they are more than understanding about specific dietary preferences. In fact, we have always found the staff to be exceptionally friendly and accommodating, even when faced with our pickiest friends.

Seated on the patio, facing the herb garden, we perused the wine list, which boasts a weekly selection of about 40 wines, with prices ranging from Euro 25 to Euro 100. We chose a glass of chilled champagne to start, while the waitress brought out crusty bread, olive oil and giant, juicy green olives. Once we moved into the restaurant, our feast began in earnest. Fresh, seasonal asparagus was served alongside heirloom beets and crispy potato croquettes. Perfectly prepared scallops sat alongside salty samphire. Our Spring chicken main, spicy and succulent, was served with a bright orange carrot oil that added an interesting earthy note. We delighted in a dessert of frozen yoghurt and panna cotta topped with blueberries and strawberries. And when we thought things couldn't get better, they served a tray of tender Madeleines, sugar coated fruit pastilles and other pastries with our coffee. In short, De Kas is a must!
