- 1). Water the turf, two days before fertilizing, to a depth of 6 inches. The soil should be moist, but the grass should be dry when you apply the fertilizer.
- 2). Place the spreader on a hard surface, such as a sidewalk or driveway, to avoid spilling on the lawn and to make cleanup of spills easier. Pour the fertilizer, at the rate suggested on the package for the size of your lawn, into the spreader.
- 3). Walk around the perimeter of the lawn, fertilizing the borders first.
- 4). Walk over the rest of the lawn, applying half the fertilizer in north-to-south strips. Apply the remaining half crossing over the first application in east-to-west strips.
