How to Install Pavers Around a Patio

104 33

    Preparation

    • 1). Outline your pathway by driving 18-inch-long stakes into the ground approximately every 4 feet. You may need to put them closer together to maintain the desired shape of your path. Tie string from stake to stake until the entire pathway is outlined. Lay out the pavers on a portion of your desired path to create a dry run of your design.

    • 2). Remove pavers from the path. Take out all sod from the desired area, and dig the bed to a depth of 2 inches plus the depth of the pavers. Maintain a slope away from the patio of about 1/4 inch per foot to ensure proper drainage.

    • 3). Dig a trench for the edging. Put edging in place by positioning a row of pavers vertically (side by side on their ends) or by tipping them at a 45 degree angle to make a sawtooth edge. Be sure the top of the edging is level.

    • 4). Lay a 2-inch base of sand in your path. You will need about 1 yard of sand for every 150 square feet. Level the sand using a screed. A screed can be made with a 2 by 4 cut to the width of the path, including the edging. Cut notches into the ends the depth and width of the pavers.

    • 5). Moisten the sand, and compact it using a tamper. Add more sand to maintain the 2-inch depth. Level the sand with the screed.

    Laying Pavers

    • 1). Cover the prepared path with 15-pound roofing felt, overlapping the edges 6 inches. Use your knife to cut holes about every 12 inches to ensure drainage. Place the pavers on the felt, starting at one end or corner.

    • 2). You will need about 675 pavers for every 150 square feet. Place them in the desired pattern, pressing them tightly together. Use a rubber mallet to level the pavers.

    • 3). Place cut pavers into any gaps along the edges of the path. Ensure all pavers are level. Cover them with a layer of dry sand. Sweep the entire path, letting the sand go into the joints between the pavers. Continue to cover with dry sand and sweep every two days until the joints are filled with sand.
