    Rigging

    • 1). Tie a swivel to the end of the six-pound monofilament line with a clinch knot. Feed the line through the loop on the swivel and wrap the end of the line around the main line seven times. Feed the line through the opening at the base of the turns and pull the knot tight.

    • 2). Cut a three-foot section of four-pound fluorocarbon line from a spool. Make a loop on one end of the line with a surgeon's knot. Fold the end of the line to create a loose loop. Grasp the loop and tie a double overhand knot to make it permanent. Clip the tag end flush to the knot.

    • 3). Open the clip on the swivel and hook the loop on the clip. Place the end of the clip in the slot to secure the loop to the swivel.

    • 4). Tie the opposite end of the fluorocarbon to a one-sixteenth ounce lead head jig with a clinch knot. Use a jig with a synthetic fur or marabou body with a combination of white, chartreuse and black coloring. Do not attach the float until you locate a fishing spot.

    Fishing

    • 1). Launch your boat at one of the seven public ramps around the lake. Turn on your fish finder and move around the lake until you locate groups of fish. Focus on the bluffs, rock outcroppings and shelf areas around the lake. The bass in Boone Lake gather in these areas and suspend in deep water during the winter months.

    • 2). Turn off the boat motor and read the average depth of the fish. Ten feet of water is a common depth for suspended fish. Clip the strike indicator on the line to match the depth of the fish. The depth is a critical factor because the lethargic fish will not move far for food.

    • 3). Cast the rig over the fish and retrieve at an extremely slow pace. The slow retrieve is intended only to maintain tension on the line for strike detection.

    • 4). Watch the float and add pressure to the line immediately above the reel to feel for subtle strikes. Set the hook on slight pressure changes to catch the slow moving fish.
