You may have learned by now that Google+ is approving more custom or vanity URLs this week.
This is a big relief to users eager to change their long URL into something shorter and easy to remember.
For those of you asking how to claim the URL, there are some things you need to know first.
Google+ has provided a set of criteria for its users to follow before it can approve their unique URL.
Firstly, your Google+ account needs to have at least 10 followers.
Secondly, it has to have a profile photo and thirdly, your account has to be established or should be at least 30 days old.
If you meet these three requirements, then you can head on to your profile page to claim your custom URL.
You will normally get a notification saying you can now customize your Google+ URL.
To start off, click the Get a custom URL button.
If you can't find this, go to your About page and click the Get link found under your Google+ URL.
You will then see a list of approved URLs for you.
Select the one close to your name or the one you like the most.
To make it more unique, you may have to add more letters or numbers.
Next, tick the box for the Terms of Service then click Change URL.
Google+ will next verify your account through the mobile phone number you have provided.
If you haven't given this yet, a pop up box will show asking you to enter your mobile phone number.
You will also need to check the box to make it easy for people to find you on Google services, check your phone for the code sent to you and enter the code in the box provided.
When done, click the Verify button.
If you're okay with the URL you have chosen, click Confirm choice.
Do remember that this unique URL can no longer be changed once approved hence, it's a good idea to double check it before confirming your choice.
Released in 2011, Google+ has since grown rapidly to become the second largest social media platform in the western world.
To date, it has 500 million users and counting.
Users of Google+ are assured of high rankings in the Google search engine compared to users of other social media sites even without any activity on the part of the user.
