Write Your Memories To Share Your Wisdom - Tips To Get Women Started Writing

103 20
Memoir writing is about sharing.
Not exclusively because we also write for ourselves (and that's not selfish).
But we should be sharing our memories of family, life's lessons learned and wisdom gained.
If you've been wondering about the benefits of growing older, wisdom is one of them.
The longer we live, the more wisdom we have.
We can't help it.
We live; we step in it; we learn.
It's that simple.
If you embrace life and put yourself out there and kick up some dust, then the longer you live the more mistakes you'll make.
What marvelous material for memoirs, especially when you can make your readers the beneficiaries of your wisdom.
So how do you turn your wisdom into a memoir that serves as a guide for others? You can start by thinking about different domains of experience.
Here are a few to get you thinking: Relationships, Love, Work, Faith, Survival, Learning, Finance, Health, Sexuality, and Friendship.
Imagine the gifts you could pass on to readers if you could write a lesson on each of these topics.
If you are having trouble coming up with a memorable event for each of these categories, create your own domains of experience.
Or cast your net beyond your own personal experiences.
For example, what about the lessons your parents passed down to you? Did they teach you about unconditional love? Compassion? Honesty? Thrift? Beauty? If you tell your parents' story from your point of view and focus on what their lessons have meant to you, it becomes your memoir.
You can amplify your parents' story with an example of how you tried to follow their lesson.
Or maybe their wisdom was lost on you at first (most readers can relate to that).
Maybe some event triggered your own epiphany.
By writing about the lessons life has taught you, you bring your own wisdom into focus.
You learn to articulate your wisdom.
Sometimes you discover your wisdom for the first time.
And, of course, you remove that lock on your life and make your treasured lessons available to others.
Are you beginning to discover the wonderful gift that is memoir writing? We always give you something extra, so here's your Bonus Writing Prompt: Write about the first time you left home for any length of time.
Did you spend a whole summer at camp? Did you go away to college? What kind of experience was that for you? Or, did you move to an apartment and go to work? Was it work that influenced your life? Who were some of the people you met at college or in your first major job? Have you stayed friends?
