What is a Felony Arrest?
- Committing a serious traffic offense often leads to a felony arrest. Driving under the influence of alcohol continues to be the most common felony traffic violation. Other serious traffic offenses that typically result in a felony arrest include: hit and run and vehicular homicide.
- There are several other serious crimes deemed felonies. Rape, murder, burglary, child abuse and many drug offenses--such as trafficking a controlled substance--can result in a felony arrest.
- The consequences of being arrested for committing a felony vary between states, and depend upon specific circumstances surrounding each case. Some common punishments levied by states toward convicted felons are imprisonment, heavy fines and either probation or parole. 'Three Strikes' laws were enacted by states to help deter repeat felonies by sentencing a person to life in prison after they are charged with three felonies.
