Secrets to Straightening Thick Hair
- Don't add to your already naturally thick hair by overprocessing it.Jupiterimages/Pixland/Getty Images
Naturally thick hair is that way because the hair follicles are "thirsty" and seek out moisture from the air. This behavior is most noticeable in humid or rainy weather. Overusing chemical enhancements to your hair, such as coloring it frequently, can create the same thick and frizzy texture. - Take a good look at the ingredients you put in your hair.Jupiterimages/Creatas/Getty Images
Trying to straighten your hair without applying the right product first is similar to preparing for battle without a weapon. Substitute products with alcohol in the ingredient list for a moisture enhancing, straightening cream. After conditioning, rinse with cool water. A smoothing serum will help to thin the hair and create shine. You will use heating tools, so apply a heat-protecting product to your hair. The amount of product you use always depends on your hair length and thickness. - Be an active drier, not a lazy one.Hemera Technologies/AbleStock.com/Getty Images
The process of blow drying your hair is the foundation for how straight the hair becomes. Use clips to section off your hair, separating the bottom from the top and the front from the middle and back. Blow dry using a round brush and with the dryer nozzle pointed downward so as not to encourage the hair to lift. Start with the underneath sections, working from root to end, before proceeding to the top. Only after your hair is bone dry can you finish with a quick use of a ceramic flat iron, no thicker than 1 1/2 inches. - Discuss straightening treatments with your hair stylist first.Creatas Images/Creatas/Getty Images
If you truly can't put in the effort, or want to be rid of your thick hair for a while, there are treatments to permanently straighten the hair. While the effects of such new treatments are being investigated, and your hair will grow out with the same texture, Brazilian and Japanese hair straightening is available in almost every salon. Consult with your hair stylist to make sure it's the best solution for you.
