- 1). Contact your local zoning board and ask what laws and guidelines you must adhere to. Determine what permits will be needed and figure those permit costs into your final budget.
- 2). Create a model of your backyard. It is easy to do if you purchase deck design software that allows you to make a computer model by using simple icons and instructions. The model should include your pool, any existing decks and anything that would influence the design of a deck, such as trees surrounding the pool or a steep grade that leads off one side of the pool.
- 3). Decide where the new deck will be placed. If there is an existing deck on the back of the house you may want to consider connecting the two, but it would be helpful to consider a pool deck design on its own first. Keep local zoning laws and guidelines in mind.
- 4). Consider several different kinds of designs before deciding on the final one. Some considerations include: a partial deck that surrounds only one part of the pool and does not offer full access; a complete deck that wraps around the entire pool; or a multilevel deck that may feature an area for a barbecue grill or a step down to an existing deck. It may be useful to take a drive around your neighborhood and see other above-ground pool deck designs.
- 5). Develop a list of materials you will need for the job, and then create a cost estimate. Check to see if your deck design software offers the ability to create a supplies list. Be sure to use weather-resistant material such as pressure-treated wood and stainless steel deck screws.
- 6). Decide on a color that matches your current backyard color scheme. In most cases, a natural wood color would be appropriate. However, if you are attaching the pool deck to an existing deck you may want to make sure the colors are the same.
- 7). Think about finishing touches such as deck lighting, landscaping and gates to limit access.
