Since its inception in early the twentieth century, people have enjoyed playing the game of basketball. Indeed, in the United States, professional and college basketball has gained quite a following nationwide. Now, with the immense popularity of the NBA and its superstars, many students are looking to get noticed in college basketball recruiting, to play in college teams and even perhaps in the NBA.

Basketball is a sport comprising of two teams, which in turn has five players each. The objective is to score by shooting a ball through a hoop, elevated on a post 10 feet from the ground, also known as the court. The ball is propelled through the court by means of dribbling or passing. A team (or player) that succeeds in getting the ball into the hoop scores a field goal, known as a shot or basket. Free throws are awarded whenever certain fouls are committed. Personal fouls include any type of illegal physical contact, which include hitting, pushing, lapping, holding, and illegal pick/screen, which results when an offensive player is moving. Free throws are rewarded to the fouled player depending on a number of factors which includes the gravity of the foul, the position of the player/s when the foul occurred, and whether the fouled player was in the act of shooting or not.

Charging is when a player pushes or runs over a defensive player. The ball is given to the team that the foul was committed upon. Blocking is illegal personal contact resulting from a defender not establishing position in time to prevent an opponent's drive to the basket. A flagrant foul means violent contact between two (or even more) players has occurred. This involves hitting, kicking, and punching. Free throws are awarded; in addition, the team retains possession of the ball after the free throws. An intentional foul results when a player makes physical contact with another, without any reasonable effort to steal the ball. This is usually a judgment call made by the officials. Technical fouls can be committed by both players and coaches. Grounds for a technical foul include foul language, obscenity, obscene gestures, and combative arguing.
