    • 1). Check the current amount of memory on the computer. To do this, open the Control Panel and double click on the System icon. When the System Properties screen fully loads, it will say how much RAM the computer has at the bottom. In most cases, it will be two, three or four gigabytes of RAM. The Dell 1525 is only upgradeable to a maximum of 4 gigabytes of memory, so if it already has four gigabytes, it cannot be upgraded further.

    • 2). Find compatible memory sticks for the Dell 1525 laptop. The best way to do this is to shop through an online seller that can present you with all of the compatible components for a specific make and model of laptop. A link to one such site can be found in the resources section.

    • 3). Decide how much memory you want to install in the laptop. For the best system performance, it is recommended that you buy and install two memory sticks of equal size rather than two sticks of unequal size. In almost every case, this will leave you with only the option of upgrading to the maximum of four gigabytes.

    • 4). Purchase two sticks of memory, preferably of equal size. Make sure they do not exceed 4 gigabytes combined and that they are compatible with the Dell 1525 laptop before finalizing your order.

    • 5). Shut down the laptop, disconnect the power cord and remove the battery. Press the power button once to discharge any stored power, then close the lid.

    • 6). Turn the laptop over onto its lid and get your screwdriver and replacement memory sticks ready.

    • 7). Touch a metal surface not on the computer to discharge any static energy stored in your fingers. Discharging static energy onto exposed computer components can cause permanent damage.

    • 8). Look at the hatch in the middle of the bottom of the laptop. It's held in place with several small screws, and it has a simple illustration of a memory chip molded into the plastic of the hatch. Remove all of the screws holding this hatch in place, then lift the hatch off.

    • 9). Remove the screws on the small metal plate just under the hatch, and set these screws and the plate aside. The memory sticks are just underneath this.

    • 10

Press down on the side of the top memory stick that is not inserted into the plastic bracket. The stick will pop up on one end. Grab this end and pull the stick straight out, then do the same with the stick underneath it.

    • 11

Insert one of the new sticks into the bottom slot first. To do this, stick the end of the stick with the copper connections on it into the slot at the bottom of the plastic bracket. Push it in at about a 45 degree angle first (the same angle you held the old sticks to remove them), then when it's all the way in, push straight down on the raised end. It will make a clicking noise when pressed into place.

    • 12

Repeat step 11 with the other memory stick, inserting it into the top slot on the plastic bracket.

    • 13

Replace the small metal plate and the screws holding it in place.

    • 14

Replace the outer hatch and the screws holding it in place.

    • 15

Replace the battery, reconnect the computer to the power source, turn it right side up again and boot it up. It is now upgraded with more memory.
