How to Sell to a Salvage Yard
- 1). Call several salvage yards to see which one is offering the best price. Many yards pay a "per pound" amount rather than a set fee. Ask if they include free towing services. If the amount is too low, make another attempt to sell the vehicle for parts through a local newspaper, store bulletin board or auto-trading magazine.
- 2). Arrange pickup of the vehicle. Have all necessary paperwork ready, such as vehicle title, your photo ID and your bill of sale, if available. Some yards will take vehicles with missing or incomplete paperwork, but will give you a far lower amount than if you have proof of ownership.
- 3). Get paid. Some yards will pay you on pickup of the vehicle. Others will make you come in person to the yard before paying you. Congratulate yourself on getting paid to help the environment and reduce landfill waste.
- 4). Provide a hauling service. If you have a pickup truck, with or without a trailer, use it to haul junk for others in your community. Rent a truck or trailer if you are going to make more money from the salvage you collect than the cost of the rental truck. Some people just want to get rid of large appliances, machinery or junk autos.
- 5). Get ID, bills of sale, and copies of titles before agreeing to haul autos or equipment.
