- 1). Paint the walls a dark hue. To give the entire primitive country bedroom a color backdrop that is appropriate for the space, paint the walls a dark, muted color, such as barn red, deep green, mustard yellow, rich brown or Wedgewood blue. Use flat paint to give the room a feeling of depth. Punctuate the painted walls with crisp white or cream molding to create a starting point for the subsequent decorating layers of design.
- 2). Dress the bed. Layer a patchwork quilt with additional primitive country bedroom linens. Give the bed a completed look by choosing a ruffled bed skirt in eyelet lace to cover the area from the bed frame to the floor. Add quilted pillow shams and accent pillows with homespun fabric designs. Complete the bed area with a few primitive dolls propped near the bed pillow area as a way to enhance the decor.
- 3). Add primitive antiques. Incorporate vintage furniture pieces, such as an old trunk, vintage bench, antique dresser and desk, to accent the primitive theme of the space. Primitive antiques have simple lines with no ornamentation. They also have heavily worn surfaces from years of wear. Further accent the decor with smaller antique items, including doll collections and embroidery samplers for a primitive bedroom decor with simple style.
- 4). Incorporate primitive-inspired lighting. In a room that is dark-hued, lighting is important. Add table lamps that are topped with homespun fabric shades in a small-checked pattern to both sides of the bed area. Sconces in punched-tin designs give wall areas light near dresser areas. Hanging a large wooden candle chandelier above the bed adds drama and emphasizes the focal point of the room. Finish the design with candles placed in tins filled with potpourri to add a soft glow to the primitive bedroom decor.
- 5). Display primitive accessories. Complete the bedroom decor by showcasing accents around the room. Use large twig baskets to hold magazines and books. Showcase simple folk art paintings on the walls, and showcase old pottery crocks on a shelf as a final accent to the primitive decor.
