Neighborhood Bike Patrols Can Help Improve Safety in our Society

101 14
Over the years, bike patrols have become very common because they serve as security guards that watch over neighborhoods and can simultaneously cover a lot of ground on their bicycles. If you'd like to know how to bring this approach to your neighborhood and how these speedy little guys can help keep your neighborhood safe, keep reading.

The history of bike patrolling began early in the 1860's in Illinois, when a sheriff and his team of deputies started using bikes as a way to safeguard communities. This trend soon grew popular and after another two decades there were almost 50,000 bike patrols in the United States of America. However, with the advancement of technology, bike patrols began to be replaced by police cars with newer built in radio and telephone technology. In New York in 1934, the bicycle squad had been terminated altogether. Police officers now started depending on their vehicles and stations more than ever, thus keeping them away from the actual city where they were initially required to serve.

By the time 1960 rolled around, societies began to notice the difference in police protection and asked for a backwards shift. Between 1968 and 1973, Presidential Commissions heard the peoples cry and urged police to patrol neighborhoods on foot instead of by vehicle. Due to this, bike patrols started becoming popular again and the Chief of Police in Lindsay, California noticed that bike patrols were just as effective in covering ground as police that patrolled in cars. In fact the bikes helped officers get a clearer, higher view of the town on their high seats. Moreover, in Baltimore, the number of bike patrols was increased which eventually led to a 50% decrease in crime rates within six months. With the increased acceptance of bike patrols by the citizens of the United States, the police found it much easier to travel through narrow allies and get by in traffic without wasting much time.

Bike patrols proved to offer a handful of advantages over police cars:
  • Greater visibility due to higher seats
  • Faster than police on foot
  • Able to reach areas inaccessible by vehicle
  • Easily maneuverable through traffic
  • Less costly

Neighborhood Advantages include:
  • Increased community interaction
  • Greater opportunity to observe and report crimes
  • Increased patrol area
  • Source of exercise
  • Increased traffic enforcement

Overall, although bike patrols have fewer responsibilities than your average police department, they can be quite beneficial to the society and can prove to be excellent safeguards. Every community should employ bike patrols that can protect the city from criminal offenses. They  have numerous advantages to them and are easily approachable by citizens of the state. Hopefully this article provides enough insight into bicycle patrols and encourages communities who have not employed bike patrols to do so. Throughout history, they have proved to be effective and efficient in protecting the country from danger and still continue to do so today. Although automobiles have been praised for their convenience, this is one situation where bicycles have proven to be a smarter choice.
