How to use a Lindy Fishing Rig

    • 1). Choose the right fishing equipment. A 6 1/2- to 7-foot rod is best, and should be paired with a spinning reel and 6- to 8-pound test monofilament. Hooks ranging from size 6 to 8 are best, and 1/8- to 1-ounce slip sinkers will cover any fishing situation. The sinker should be only as heavy as is necessary to keep it in contact with the bottom.

    • 2). Put together the Lindy rig. Slide a sinker onto the fishing line. Tie a swivel onto the end of the line. Tie a 36-inch length of fishing line to the other end of the swivel. Tie a hook to the end of the line.

    • 3). Choose a fishing spot. Lindy rigs are good choices nearly anywhere walleyes are found. The best places are along the edges of flats, drop-offs, weedlines, and humps and reefs.

    • 4). Impale bait onto your hook by inserting the hook point, passing it through the bait, and bringing it out the other side. Hook minnows behind the dorsal fin or through the lips. Hook leeches right below their sucker. Hook night crawlers at one end. Lindy rigs will be most productive if the bait is lively.

    • 5). Open the bail of the fishing reel and let the rig drop to the bottom. Once it reaches the bottom, place your index finger on the line. That will ensure no more line goes off the reel, and give you better feel for what's happening on the bottom.

    • 6). Drift or troll the rig through likely areas. Impart action on the rig from time to time by lifting and lowering the rod tip, or pulling the tip forward.

    • 7). Feel for a bite with your index finger, and watch the tip of your rod for any sudden taps. Bites on Lindy rigs range from hard hits to a slight increase in resistance. When a fish bites, release line and allow the fish to get the bait in its mouth. Count to 15, drop the rod tip toward the water, and then set the hook with a sweeping motion.
