Effects of War on Civil Infrastructure
Wars had been happening since man existed and societies and nations were established. Today's warfare is even more sophisticated and advanced, creating more severe impact to humanity.
With the many consequences of war, collateral damage on social and civil infrastructure requires proper attention.
One does not need technical research to understand war's effect on infrastructure. Just read the news and see civil infrastructure destroyed, some beyond repair.
For instance, from the demonstration in Kiev to Russia's annexation of Crimea one can't help but think about how civil infrastructure were vandalized, burned and rendered dysfunctional for weeks of rally.
The Syrian Civil War caused thousands of Syrians to flee from their war-torn country. Can you imagine life in refugee camps of Jordan, Lebanon, Turkey, and Iraq and even as far as North Africa and Europe?
These refugee camps may provide simple utility infrastructure for its settlers but for sure they are a far-cry from the convenience that infrastructure back home offers.
In order for us to get a clear understanding about the real effects of war on infrastructure, I have here a good list for everyone's information:
Water Supply
The effect of war to the nation's water supply system is inevitable. Chances are, water system might get damaged, shut down and halted due to some bomb blasts. Contamination of water is more likely to occur due to broken and damaged pipes. There would then be a shortage of clean drinking water for the public consumption. This destruction of the country's water infrastructure system will certainly create a chaotic scene.
Health and Environmental Impact
When war is going on, health and environment are affected. The effect could last for long even after the war has ended. Technological progress is helpless to protecting the environment and public health against a raging war. You might have seen the terrible effect of biological weapons on human beings.
Structure Degradation
The aftermath of war always leaves serious destruction. Bombing reduces building structures into rubble, smoke envelopes wide areas, and debris scattered everywhere. Malls, parks and other recreation facilities will stop operating. Looting is expected. Hence, it leaves the public no choice but to stay at home if it's still safe and feasible. Most likely, the population will evacuate. Thus, normal way of living will be completely altered and possibly worsen.
Aside from the direct effects of war on the nation's infrastructure, the psychological effects to the public can't be denied. The fear and the trauma that war creates will remain almost forever especially among children. Imagine a child deprived of going out and playing freely. He or she has lost the chance to grow up in a healthy and peaceful environment.
